Wheaton, Ill. -- One week after sweeping Illinois Tech in a resumption of its home non-conference schedule, the Thunder women's tennis team moved outdoors for the first time in 2024 to host Roosevelt University on campus. Wheaton, ranked #40 in this week's ITA Division III women's tennis national top 50 poll, overpowered the visiting Lakers by a margin of 6-3 to extend its current win streak to four matches. The Thunder's season record now stands at 13-3.
Lydia Adams combined with reigning CCIW Women's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week
Madeline Gentry to post an 8-5 win at #1 doubles and ensure Wheaton's early advantage, after
Carly O'Leary and
Tatum Thurstone sailed to an 8-2 result in their #3 doubles fixture.
Roosevelt took the #1 singles matchup to tie the score at two points apiece, but
Audrey Vick earned a straight-sets victory at #2 singles by a score of 7-5, 6-4 to tilt the momentum back in the hosts' favor.
Alexandra Wachs, Adams, and
Delaney Canning each registered wins after three sets in their #3, #4, and #6 singles fixtures, respectively. Wachs took the first frame 6-4 and saw off her Lakers opponent in a competitive 7-6 third-set tiebreak to claim a key point for Wheaton. Adams and Canning both shook off first-set defeats to come back and earn the match win, with the former posting a 6-4, 6-3 tilt in the last two frames and the latter winning her two sets at 6-2, 7-5.
After today's victory, Wheaton will now spend the next two weeks away from competition. The squad's next match on the schedule is a home contest against Coe College on Saturday, April 13th.
