Hanover Park, Ill. -- One week after defeating Hope College in a non-conference match at Centre Court Athletic Club, the Wheaton men's tennis team returned to the venue to host the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons in another non-conference affair. The Thunder sailed to a dominant 9-0 result this afternoon and improved to 3-3 on the year with today's win.
The two teams played the singles matches before the doubles fixtures on Saturday, and it was doubles partners
Joey Geisz and
Jacob Williams that registered the first points in Wheaton's score with individual victories. Geisz bageled his #3 singles rival in the first set and kept his foot on the gas for a 6-1 second-set win. Williams matched this 6-1 scoreline in both of his sets at #4 singles to earn a comfortable result.
Corin Tang secured his first victory of 2024 with a confident 6-1, 6-3 triumph in his #6 singles fixture, and
Tim Steiner made similarly easy work of his #2 singles match, winning 6-2, 6-3.
Andrew Jang earned the win in a competitive #5 singles battle thanks to a first-set tiebreak and 6-4 margin in the second frame.
Jack Booker made it six points from six for the Thunder with victory in his #1 singles duel after a marathon 13-11 tiebreak win and 6-3 second-set result.
Geisz and Williams moved up to the #1 doubles position on Saturday, but they kept their unbeaten streak alive with ease, taking the match at 8-2. Wheaton also earned an 8-2 win at #3 doubles courtesy of
Michael Walmer and
Andrew Winters. Concordia Wisconsin nearly walked away with a point after forcing a tiebreak at #2 doubles, but
Cody Ching and
Graham Shelton outlasted their Falcons opponents for an 8-7 win to complete the sweep for the Thunder.
Wheaton will look to move above .500 on the campaign when it heads to Orlando, Florida next weekend to play its series of Spring Break matches. The Thunder's first contest comes on Monday morning against Division II opponent, Cedarville University.
