Thunder diving teams compete in first night of 2024 Wheaton Invite

Mateo Anderson had a strong showing in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events on Thursday
Wheaton, Ill. -- The 43rd annual Wheaton Invitational began inside Lederhouse Natatorium on Thursday evening, as eight Thunder diving student-athletes competed against members of two other programs in four total events. Lara Stamp and Mateo Anderson led the way for the Wheaton women's and men's squads, respectively, as the two divers earned the highest total scores in both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions tonight.

Stamp (pictured right) tallied an impressive mark of 294.70 in the women's 1-meter final, which is the best score in the CCIW and currently ranks 36th in all of Division III this season. The freshman also posted a Lara Stampconference-leading score in the 3-meter dive tonight at 300.10, good for 31st in the nation in 2024-25.

Fellow first-year diver Isabelle Fitzpatrick also cleared the 200-point mark in the 1-meter competition via a score of 201.20. The sophomore earned a finals score of 217.10 in the 3-meter competition, joining Stamp as the only other Wheaton women's diver to participate in both events on Thursday.

Renata Marantz registered a tally of 193.30 in the 1-meter field, and Julia Buchenauer posted a mark of 163.50 in the same competition. Kate Tukiendorf earned a score of 68.35 in her 1-meter field.

Three men's divers jumped off the boards for Wheaton this evening, and Anderson posted event-best marks in both competitions to lead the trio. The junior tallied a score of 325.95 in the 1-meter event to secure a new conference-leading total in the competition and the 22nd-highest current mark in Division III this year. The reigning CCIW champion in the 3-meter dive registered a total score of 302.30 in that event tonight to crack the current top 20 marks in the country and establish a new league standard.

Wade Watkins and Tristen Guzman made their Wheaton Invite debuts on Thursday and posted scores of 195.00 and 177.20 in the 3-meter dive, respectively. Watkins also participated in the 1-meter competition and earned a mark of 175.35.

With the diving portion of the Invite now complete, Wheaton's swimmers will take to the pool for two days of competition against seven visiting programs. Friday's action will begin at 9:30 AM with prelims, while Saturday's prelims will start at 10 AM. Event finals are set for a 5 PM start time on both days. The Thunder divers are finished competing for the calendar year and will next return to action on January 11th when Wheaton hosts Hope College and Kalamazoo College for a tri-meet.
