Wheaton men's swimming captures three conference titles on Friday; moves into second place

Ben Coley's butterfly victory and two runner-up finishes made for key contributions
Pleasant Prairie, Wis. -- The penultimate day of this year's CCIW Swimming Championships arrived on Friday, and the Thunder men's team had its strongest showing of the meet thus far. Wheaton put three swimmers on top of the podium in separate competitions to overtake rivals Carthage College in the team standings and rise into second place heading into the final day of action.

Defending champions Augustana College continue to lead the field after Friday's slate, collecting a total of 749 points to establish a healthy advantage in the rankings. The Thunder overturned Thursday's narrow deficit behind Carthage to leap into second place with a 616 tally. The Firebirds are now third with 521 points, and there is a sizable gap between them and the rest of the competing teams, with fellow Wisconsin program Carroll University in fourth on 141.

The Vikings extended their control over the relay events this evening, coming in first in the men's 200-yard medley in photo-finish fashion. Wheaton's quartet of Jac Cummings, Nick John, Ben Coley, and Kaden Gannon swam to a second-place standing on a season-best 1:31.72 combined time, cruelly missing out on the title and full points tally by just .07 seconds.

But the Thunder would claim their first gold medal of the day in the next event anyway, as Jed Ritchie won the 400-yard IM title for the second-consecutive year. The sophomore posted a season-best mark of 4:04.74 in the final, improving on his seed time by five seconds. Teammate Isaac Eilmes logged a 4:06.72 time to finish as the event's runner-up. It was then Coley's turn to bring in a solo medal of his own, with the junior topping the field in the 100-yard butterfly competition. The Wisconsin native set a new personal-best in the event with a 49.05 prelim time, and, despite slowing down to match his previous best mark of 49.43 in the final, won the race as the only swimmer to finish it in less than 50 seconds. The Thunder closed out the evening's program with a 1-2 placement in the 100-yard backstroke field, as Cummings and Coley secured the top two ranks. The former clocked a 51.13 finals time to win the event for the second year running and shaved .05 off his winning time from 2025, while the latter came in second on a 51.62 count.

Augustana may prove to have a large enough lead to seal its fourth-consecutive conference win on Saturday, but Wheaton will still be looking to end the week on a high note and remain in front of third-placed Carthage. Saturday's decisive schedule of events will begin with another round of 10:30 AM prelims before the championships conclude at 6 PM.
