Wheaton, Ill. -- Less than 24 hours after sweeping the Illinois Wesleyan Titans to start the last weekend of its fall season, the Thunder women's tennis team returned to the Wheaton Tennis Courts to welcome the Millikin Big Blue for another conference matchup. The hosts secured their second 7-0 victory in as many days to wrap up the 2024 slate with a fourth-consecutive win. Wheaton's record is 8-2 heading into the winter offseason and the team finishes its fall season with a 7-1 mark in conference play. The Thunder will learn their final position in the 2024-25 CCIW standings on Tuesday evening.
Today's visitors were not able to field a pair of players for the #3 doubles match, so Wheaton needed one win from two fixtures to claim the doubles point this afternoon. They captured both contests, as
Lydia Adams and
Madeline Gentry combined to pull out a 7-6 win in the first spot and
Ella Malone and
Tatum Thurstone earned another dual victory via a 6-2 result.
The home side was handed a major boost by not having to contest either the #5 or #6 singles matches on Saturday due to Millikin forfeits, but Wheaton still claimed each of the four competitive singles fixtures to secure the victory, regardless. Malone wrapped up her first semester of collegiate tennis in style, registering another double-bagel clean sweep in her #4 matchup, while
Alexandra Wachs and Adams joined her on comfortable straight-set wins with 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-2 victories at #2 and #3 singles, respectively. Gentry captured the first set of her #1 singles duel, 7-5, but had to shake off a second-set defeat to eventually claim a 7-6 tiebreak win in the third frame to emerge victorious in a high-quality singles battle and secure the clean sweep for the hosts.
Wheaton is currently second in this season's conference standings and owns a head-to-head tiebreaker over North Central. The Cardinals host the unbeaten North Park Vikings on Tuesday afternoon, and the outcome of that match will determine where the Thunder place in the final table. After a strong fall campaign, the Wheaton women's team will return to competition in February 2025.
