Thunder women's tennis team sweeps Illinois Wesleyan in first of two weekend matches

Wheaton, Ill. -- One week after logging a 7-0 victory in a home match over the Elmhurst Bluejays, the Wheaton women's tennis team repeated the result at the campus tennis courts this evening in its CCIW contest against the Illinois Wesleyan Titans. The Thunder squad moves to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in conference action this season with Friday's win and currently sits second in the CCIW standings heading into the final fixture of 2024.

Both the #1 and #2 doubles positions resulted in 6-3 match wins for the hosts tonight, with Madeline Gentry and Lydia Adams combining in the first spot and Tatum Thurstone teaming up with recently announced CCIW Student-Athlete of the Week Ella Malone in the second pairing. The Thunder did not need to win the third doubles matchup to collect the overall point for the section having won at #1 and #2, but Wheaton earned a sweep of the three contests anyway when Janet Kondo and Delaney Canning dug deep to grind out a 7-6 victory.

All six singles matches were decided in straight sets as Wheaton dominated the play against its Bloomington opponent. Gentry posted a comfortable 6-0, 6-3 win in the top singles position, and Alexandra Wachs contributed a point to the Thunder's tally with a 6-2, 6-4 result at #2 singles. Adams joined her aforementioned doubles partner on two personal victories for the evening with a 6-3, 6-3 showing in the third singles spot. Malone continued her red-hot form with a #4 singles win at the exact same scoreline as Adams, while Canning captured a second positive result of the night via a 6-3, 6-4 victory in #5 singles. Thurstone capped a perfect performance for Wheaton with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win in the final singles position.

Facing a short turnaround, the Wheaton women will stay on campus tomorrow for a 12 PM matchup against Millikin University in the Thunder's final contest of the fall season.
