Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton women's tennis team opened up its 2023-24 season on Friday evening with a non-conference match against Edgewood (0-1). The Thunder (1-0) defeated the Eagles 9-0 at the Wheaton Tennis Courts.
The Thunder opened today's sweep with three victories in doubles play. The No. 1 doubles team of
Lydia Adams and
Madeline Gentry defeated Edgewood's Cassie Henderson and Madelyn Connaughty, 8-3.
Janet Kondo and
Audrey Vick earned an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles against the Eagles' Jewell Lindwall and Ellie Murphy. The Thunder tandem of
Alexandra Wachs and
Tatum Thurstone topped the Edgewwod team of Christina Ekkela and Evelyn Taylor 8-2 in their matchup at No.3 doubles.
Gentry was a 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 winner at No. 1 singles against Edgewood's Cecile Fuchs. Vick picked up a win at No. 2 singles as she topped Lindwall 6-0, 6-3. Wachs defeated Murphy 6-1, 6-3 in their match at No. 3 singles and Adams topped Taylor 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 at No. 4. Kondo was a 6-0, 6-2 victor against Ekkela at No. 5 singles and freshman
Delaney Canning opened her collegiate career with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Henderson at No. 6 singles.
Wheaton returns to action tommorrow afternoon with another non-conference matchup at home. The Thunder entertain Lake Forest College in a match slated to begin at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
