Thunder softball hosts Elmhurst for a CCIW doubleheader

Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder softball team hosted Elmhurst on Monday afternoon for a CCIW doubleheader at Ruth Leedy Field. Today's matchup was originally slated for Saturday but was postponed to today due to rain and snow on Saturday. Elmhurst rallied from behind in both games to earn the sweep. The Bluejays won the opener 6-4 and Elmhurst won the second game 4-3.
 
Elmhurst won today's opener 6-4 as the guests scored six runs, on 10 hits, with no errors and Wheaton tallied four runs, on 13 hits, with no errors. Starting pitcher Paige Andrews allowed six runs, on 10 hits, with five walks and three strikeouts.

Elizabeth Meyer, Olivia Nahorniak and Kylie Chetakian were each 2-for-4 for Wheaton. Both of Chetakian's hits were doubles and Tiegan Hoffman added a pinch hit double. Chetakian drove in two runs, while Meyer and Madison Forberg each drove in a run. Nahorniak, Elise O'Neil, Alese Antonello and Abigail Latka each scored a run for the hosts.

Each team scored two runs in their respective portion of the first inning. Both of Wheaton's runs in the first came off an RBI-double came off a double by Chetakian. Wheaton took a 3-2 lead with a run for the Thunder in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wheaton's go-ahead run came on a fielder's choice it by Meyer.

Elmhurst scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-3 lead. Forberg hit an RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh to drive in a Thunder run to account for the 6-4 final score.
Elmhurst won the second game 4-3 as the hosts scored four runs, on seven hits, with zero errors and Wheaton tallied three runs, on 11 hits, with one error. Starting pitcher Alese Antonello worked six innings, allowing four runs, on seven hits, with two strikeouts and four walks.

Meyer, Nahorniak and O'Neil each hit 2-for-3 for Wheaton and Antonello was 2-for-4. Nahorniak and O'Neil each hit a double among their two hits.

Wheaton scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning. O'Neil hit a one-out double and she scored on an RBI-single to centerfield by Forberg. Wheaton gained a 2-0 lead as the Thunder added a run in the top of the third inning. Hoffman led off the third inning with a single and she scored on a fielder's choice by Andrews.

Elmhurst trimmed Wheaton's lead to 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the third inning. The Bluejays added three runs in the bottom off the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Wheaton scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to trim the Bluejays' lead to 4-3, however, the Thunder could not complete the rally. Nahorniak hit a two-out double in the top of the seventh. She was replaced by pinch hitter Abby Coulter and Nahorniak scored on an RBI-single by Antonello.

The Thunder softball team hosts Saint Mary's (Ind.) on Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
