Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton softball team hosted CCIW leader Millikin (19-7, 8-0 CCIW) on Saturday afternoon for a conference twinbill at Ruth Leedy Field. The Big Blue took both game as the guests on the first game 4-2 and Millikin took the nightcap 6-2.
Millikin took today's first game 4-2 as the guest scored four runs, on six hits, with no errors and Wheaton tallied two runs, on five hits, with no errors. Thunder starting pitcher
Paige Andrews worked seven innings, allowing four runs, on six hits, with four walks. Andrews was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
Alese Antonello hit a home run for the Thunder and
Elise O'Neil added a double.
Millikin scored one run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. The Thunder added a run in the bottom of the third to cut the guests' lead to 3-1. Wheaton's first run came off an RBI-single by Andrews.
The Big Blue scored a run in the top of the fourth to increase the guests' lead to 4-1. Antonello hit a solo home run for the Thunder over the leftfield fence to account for the 4-2 final score.
The Big Blue earned the sweep with a 6-2 victory in the second game. Millikin scored six runs, on nine hits, with one error and Wheaton tallied two runs, on two hits, with two errors. Antonello worked all six innings in the circle for the Thunder. She allowed six runs, including four earned runs, on nine hits, with five strikeouts.
Olivia Nahorniak was 1-for-2, with a home run.
Abie Brown was 1-for-3, driving in one run.
Millikin scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Nahorniak slammed a home run over the leftfield fence in the top of the third inning to trim the Big Blue lead to 3-1.
The Big Blue scored twice in the bottom of the third inning and once in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-1 lead. O'Neil drew a one-out walk in the top of the seventh inning and she scored three batters later on a single to the left side of the infield by Brown.
Wheaton remains at home for its next five doubleheaders. The home stretch begins on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. as the Thunder host Aurora.
