Kenosha, Wis. -- The 2023 CCIW Swimming & Diving Championships began in Wisconsin on Wednesday, and the Thunder lead the field on the men's side after the conclusion of the diving competitions. The Wheaton men earned 84 points to claim an early advantage over Carthage and Augustana, respectively. Zander Guzy won the 3-meter dive to earn Wheaton's first solo diving event win since Parker Roth achieved the same in 2014. The Thunder women's divers tallied 27 points today to slot in second place behind Augustana and in front of Carthage and Carroll.
Guzy compiled a score of 318.10 to top the seven-diver field as the only competitor to cross the 300-point threshold. The sophomore from Schaumburg also earned a second-place finish in the 1-meter dive competition via a score of 324.95 to cap a successful first-ever CCIW Championships appearance. Thunder teammate Mateo Anderson placed second in the 3-meter dive with a score of 298.80, and Nate Wilson registered a third-place standing in the 1-meter dive with a total of 298.45.Â
While neither of Wheaton's female divers competed in the 3-meter diving competition,
Joelle Cheney and
Julia Buchenauer earned respective scores of 219.75 and 217.55 in the 1-meter dive to account for the 27 points on the women's side.
With the diving competitions now in the books, the Thunder teams will head to nearby Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin for the swimming championships that are set to be held over the next three days. Wheaton is seeking its first conference title on the men's side since 2014 and the first women's championship win since 2017.
