Thunder volleyball records its second-straight 'reverse sweep' in a 3-2 win at Wisconsin Lutheran

Milwaukee, Wis. - The Wheaton volleyball team improved to 2-2 on the season with a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night at Wisconsin Lutheran College. The win against the Warriors marked the second-consecutive win for the Thunder by rallying from an 0-2 deficit. WLC won the first set 25-20 and the hosts picked up a 25-18 victory in the second set. The Thunder won the third set 25-23 and tied the match at two sets apiece by winning the fourth set 25-15. Wheaton closed out the match by winning the decisive fifth set 15-8.

Five different Thunder players recorded six or more kills tonight. Caroline Capps led Wheaton with 10 kills and she recorded two service aces with nine digs. Abby Lawson recorded seven kills. Jordan Benford and Faith Bailey each had seven kills with four total blocks. Naomi Bunker tallied six kills with five total blocks.

Davis Whitehead registered a team-high 17 assists and Lacey Higgins added 15 assists. Whitehead had a team-high three service aces, with 11 digs. Allie High led the Thunder with 26 digs. 

The Warriors won the first set 25-20. Capps led Wheaton in the opening set with six kills and high recorded six digs.

WLC never trailed in the second set, winning 25-18. Lawson and Emerson Traweek each registered two kills and Higgins recorded three service aces. 

Wheaton held off the hosts by winning a tightly contested third set 25-23. WLC led 15-13 when the Thunder out-scored the hosts 5-1 to take an 18-16 lead. The Warriors responded with four-consecutive points to take a 20-18 lead. The Thunder battled back to tie the set at 22-22. WLC registered a kill on the next point to take a 23-22 lead. Bunker tallied a kill to tie the set at 23-23. Benford recorded a kill on the next point to give Wheaton a 24-23 lead, and she tallied a kill on the next point to close out the set 25-23. Benford led Wheaton with four kills in the set and Lawson added three. High recorded nine digs in the set.

Wheaton won the fourth set 25-15. WLC led 3-2 early and the Thunder responded with a 6-3 advantage to take an 8-5 lead. Wheaton never trailed after that point in earning the 10-point win. Capps led the Thunder with three kills int he set, and Benford added two aces. 

Wheaton never trailed in winning the decisive fifth set 15-8. The Thunder scored the first five points in earning a 5-0 lead. The Warriors got to within four points at 12-8, however Wheaton scored the final three points in earning the 15-8 victory. Bailey and Lawson teamed for a block on the point that setup match point and Bailey registered a solo block to give Wheaton the victory. Bailey had a team-high two kills in the set and Whitehead added two aces. High recorded four digs in the set.

Wheaton  will host its first home matches of the 2022 season this weekend as it entertains four teams for the 2022 Marilyn Scribner Invitational. Wheaton faces Concordia-Chicago on Friday night at 8:00 p.m. In Saturday's final day of action the Thunder entertain Loras at 11:00 a.m. and close out action at 1:00 p.m. against Beloit.
