Thunder volleyball opens the Scribner Invitational with a 3-1 win against Concordia-Chicago

Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton volleyball team (3-2) opened its 2022 Marilyn Scribner Invitational on Friday night. The Thunder entertained Concordia Chicago in the hosts' lone match of the night. Wheaton topped the Cougars 3-1. The Thunder won the first set 25-17 and the guests won the second set 25-13. Wheaton rallied to win the third set 25-22 and the Thunder closed out the match with a 25-13 victory in the fourth set.

Caroline Capps tallied a team-high 13 kills for the Thunder tonight and Emerson Traweek added 11, Faith Bailey tallied six kills, while Naomi Bunker and Abby Lawson had five kills apiece. Davis Whitehead distributed 23 assists and Lacey Higgins had 15.

Allie High had a team-best 13 digs and she added four service aces. Bailey had a team-best seven total blocks with five for Capps and four total blocks for Bunker.

Wheaton won the opening set 25-17. The Cougars scored the first point and Wheaton tied the set at 1-1. The Thunder never trailed again in the set. Capps led the Thunder with five kills in the set, and Bailey added three. Higgins and Whitehead each had six assists, and Bailey recorded four total blocks in the set.

Concordia won the second set 25-13. Traweek had four kills to lead Wheaton in the set, as Whitehead added six assists.

Wheaton rallied to win an exciting third set 25-22. The Cougars led 14-11 when Wheaton scored four-consecutive points to take a 15-14 lead, the hosts' first lead of the set. The Thunder led 23-20 when Concordia scored the next two points to trim Wheaton's advantage to 23-22. Lawson tallied a kill on the next point to give the hosts a 24-22 lead. A block by Bunker and Lawson on the next point gave Wheaton the 25-22 win in the set and the 2-1 lead in the match score. Capps led Wheaton with three kills in the set, while Whitehead had five assists. High tallied two service aces for the hosts.

Wheaton jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the fourth set and never looked back in winning the final set 25-13. Capps and Traweek each had four kills in the set. Whitehead had six assists and Higgins tallied five assists. High recorded seven digs in the final set, while Capps and Bunker each had two total blocks.

The Marilyn Scribner Invitational concludes with four matches on Saturday. Wheaton hosts Loras in the first session at 11:00 a.m. The final session of the tournament is at 1:00 p.m. as Wheaton entertains Beloit.
