Thunder volleyball rallies for a 3-2 win against MSOE

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Wheaton closed out its participation in the Calvin Labor Day Tournament on Saturday with a 3-2 win against MSOE. The Thunder rallied from an 0-2 deficit to earn the reverse sweep against the Raiders. MSOE won the first two sets by scores of 25-16 and 25-20. Wheaton won the next two sets with identical 25-20 scores. The Thunder closed out the win with a 15-8 victory in the decisive fifth set.

The Raiders won the first two sets and held a 14-13 lead in the third set when the Thunder recorded three-consecutive points to take a 16-14 advantage. Wheaton never relinquished the lead after that point in the set in earning the 25-20 victory. Emerson Traweek had a key service ace in that key 3-0 run in the set and she added five kills. Caroline Capps tallied a team-best six kills in the set, Allie High had nine digs and Davis Whitehead had eight assists.

MSOE led 10-6 in the fourth set with Wheaton responded with a 5-1 run to tie the set at 11-11. The two teams battled back-and-forth to an 18-18 tie. Wheaton responded with four-consecutive points to take a 22-18 lead. Naomi Bunker had a kill and a block in the key 4-0 run. Wheaton won the fourth set 25-20 to send the match to a decisive fifth set. Traweek had a team-high six kills in the set and Whitehead distributed 10 assists.

The fifth set was tied 3-3 when Wheaton scored four-consecutive points to take a 7-3 lead that the team would not relinquish as the team earned the 15-8 victory in the set. Wheaton used balance in the set as Traweek had three kills, while Abby Lawson, Faith Bailey, and Bunker each had two kills apiece.

Traweek led all players with a match-high 22 kills as she earned All-Tournament selection for her effort this weekend. Capps and Lawson each registered 10 kills and Bailey added six. Whitehead distributed 33 assists with three service aces, and Lacey Higgins recorded 21 assists. Allie High registered 26 digs and Capps added 10 digs. Bunker had nine total blocks, while Capps added four.

Wheaton travels to Wisconsin Lutheran on Tuesday night for a non-conference matchup at 7:00 p.m. against the Warriors.
