Wheaton, Ill. -- In their second of two fall contests at home, the Wheaton men's tennis team eased to an 8-1 decision over the MSOE Raiders on Saturday night. The Thunder won all three doubles pairings to build a comfortable cushion then left no doubt about the ultimate outcome as five of the six singles matchups went Wheaton's way. The team's record now sits at 1-1 on the year, but they will not have a chance to secure win number two until the spring season begins in February. Wheaton is set to open their spring 2023 slate with a home tilt against Lake Forest College on February 4th.
Jacob Williams had a stellar performance, as the sophomore teamed with
Joey Geisz in the #1 doubles position to win their fixture, 8-2, before Williams dispatched his #2 singles opponent by a comfortable 6-3, 6-0 margin. Geisz himself won at #5 singles, 6-2, 6-2, to ensure that the pair completed the double on the night.
Tim Steiner was another standout player in Wheaton's win, edging his #2 doubles pairing with
Jack Wenzel, 8-7, before double-bageling his #4 singles counterpart to earn a flawless solo victory. Wenzel also registered a two-set singles win, picking up a 7-5, 6-3 decision in his #3 singles spot.
Cody Ching and
Graham Shelton clinched the doubles competition sweep for the Thunder, winning their #3 matchup by a score of 8-4. Corin Tang picked up the first singles win of his young collegiate career tonight, downing his Raiders opponent, 6-4, 6-2.
