Bloomington, Ill. -- In their second conference road match in as many days, the Wheaton men's tennis team showed no signs of fatigue. The Thunder rolled over Illinois Wesleyan, 9-0, to improve to 4-1 in CCIW play and set up a potential battle for second place in the standings next Thursday.Â
So dominant was Wheaton's win on Saturday afternoon that the visitors only dropped one set in the entire match.
Cody Ching and
Jack Booker set the tone for proceedings in their #1 doubles match, topping their hosting counterparts, 8-5.
Jacob Williams and
Joey Geisz's #2 doubles fixture followed with a similar 8-6 scoreline. Illinois Wesleyan nearly stole a point in the final doubles pairing, but
Jack Wenzel and
Tim Steiner fought off their opponents in a tiebreaker to take it 8-7.
Cody Ching went from strength to strength, taking his #1 singles pairing at a comfortable margin of 6-4, 6-2.
Jacob Williams controlled his #2 singles matchup and cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Jack Booker fell 6-1 in the first frame of his #3 singles tie but recovered to win the next two sets at 6-4.
Jack Wenzel played two contrasting sets of his #4 pairing, dominating the first, 6-1, before winning the second in an extra game.
Tim Steiner kept up his impressive form, claiming his #5 singles fixture, 6-1, 6-3.
Joey Geisz rounded off Wheaton's impressive singles slate with a first set decision of 6-1 and a second set bagel.
After a pair of comfortable wins in central Illinois this weekend, Wheaton returns home on Monday night to take on Concordia Chicago in a nonconference matchup. A trip to Kenosha arrives on Thursday, with the winner of Carthage and Wheaton claiming possession of second place in the conference.
