Grand Rapids, Mich. -- The Wheaton swim and dive teams participated in their first dual meet away from home on Saturday afternoon, as the Thunder traveled east to face off against the #21 Calvin University men's team and the Knights' 23rd-ranked women's squad. The hosts won both matchups, with the Wheaton men falling 208-83 and the women's team losing 185-91.
Elli Bennett and
Scottie McKeaney claimed Wheaton's two individual event wins on the women's side on Saturday, as the former captured the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.19 and the latter took top spot in the 500 yard freestyle by a convincing 2.96 second margin. Bennett also placed second in her 200 yard breaststroke event by comprehensively outpacing her closest Knights competitor by more than five seconds.
Katie Yonan earned a runner-up placement in the 200 yard freestyle race and was the highest Wheaton finisher in both her 50 yard and 100 yard frees.
Madison Harris also secured a second-place standing, as the junior swam to the Thunder's best finish in the 1000 yard freestyle event.Â
Despite the ultimate outcome, the Thunder women ended the day's action on a positive note, as Pelling, McKeaney,
Olivia Wiebe, and Yonan joined forces to take first place in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The quartet posted a combined time mark of 3:44.92 to edge out their nearest Calvin competitors by 1.35 seconds.
Â
Anthony Fitzgerald secured Wheaton's only solo win on the men's side, as the junior topped the standings in his 200 yard breaststroke event by a dominant 9.21 second margin. He was also the highest-placed Thunder finisher in the 50 yard free by a mere .01 time clip. Michael O'Connor and Harrison Smith each earned runner-up finishes on Saturday, as the former took second in the 500 yard freestyle and the latter claimed second place in his 100 yard butterfly. Connor Davis also claimed a second-place finish in the 200 yard IM. Before his second-place butterfly finish, Smith had registered a Wheaton-best showing in the 200 yard freestyle.
After a tough showdown against strong opposition, the Thunder swim teams are back on the road on Friday evening for a unique matchup with Carthage College. The CCIW rivals will have a two-part competition, with the Firebirds hosting Friday's events and the Thunder hosting Carthage the following afternoon to conclude the dual meet.
