Hanover Park, Ill. - The Wheaton women's tennis team opened its 2021-22 season on Friday night with a non-conference matchup against Edgewood College. The match was moved to Centre Court Athletic Club due to rain in the Wheaton area on Friday afternoon. The Thunder topped the Eagles (0-2) by a score of 8-1.
Wheaton won all three doubles matches to gain an early 3-0 lead tonight. Wheaton's first victory was an 8-2 win for the Thunder No. 2 doubles team of
Bethany Hoogerheide and
Andrea Wachs against Edgewood's Alyssa Carew and Ellie Murphy.
Abygale Ahn and
Audrey Vick teamed for an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles against the Eagles' team of Cecile Fuchs and Ally Verbauwhede.
Sarah Backer and
Lily Anne Van Ye earned an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles against the Edgewood team of Alina Tweet and Maddy Coopmans.
Vick opened up singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles against Carew. Wachs earned a 6-4, 6-0 victory in her match at No. 5 singles against Tweet. Adams defeated Coopmans 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles and Backer picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win against Murphy at No. 4 singles. Hoogerheide defeated Verbauwhede 6-7, 7-6, 11-9 in a tightly contested battle at No. 3 singles.
Wheaton (1-0) is scheduled to host Lake Forest College on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Wheaton tennis courts.Â
