Claremont, Calif. - The Wheaton volleyball team (2-2) opened up its action at the Pacific Coast Classic on Friday with a pair of matches on the campus of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. UC-Santa Cruz defeated Wheaton 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-21) in the opening match of the day. Wheaton followed with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 18-25, 25-23) victory against St. Norbert immediately following the matchup against UC-Santa Cruz. Wheaton's
Naomi Bunker earned a spot on the All-Tournament team with her performance on the weekend.
Wheaton closed its day with the 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 18-25, 25-23) win against St. Norbert. Senior
Colleen Smith led the Thunder against SNC with 15 kills and a .455 attack percentage. Smith added 10 digs and four total blocks in her stellar outing.
Caroline Capps registered nine kills,
Audrey Gerze added seven kills and
Bree Gilbert tallied six kills.
Mia Staub led the Thunder with 24 assists, adding two service aces.
Marlee Anderson added 15 assists.
Allie High led the Thunder with 25 digs and she tallied three service aces; Gerze recorded 14 digs.
Kaylee Byerly and
Naomi Bunker each had five total blocks, while Capps added four blocks.
In the match against UC-Santa Cruz to open the day, the Banana Slugs won 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-21). Bunker and Gerze each tallied seven kills, Capps registered six kills and Gilbert had five. Staub led the Thunder with 10 assists and she added three service aces. High and Gerze each recorded 13 digs for the Thunder.
Wheaton plays two matches to conclude the tournament on Saturday. The Thunder will play Cal Lutheran at 11:45 AM (PDT) and Wheaton conclude its participation in the tournament against University of LaVerne at 4:15 PM (PDT).
