Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton women's tennis team hosted Carthage College on Tuesday night in a key conference match. The Thunder defeated the Firebirds 6-3. Tonight's match started at the Wheaton Tennis Courts, however, as darkness set in the contest was moved to nearby College of DuPage due to lighting issues on Wheaton's courts.Â
The Thunder won two of the three doubles matches tonight.
Abygale Ahn and
Audrey Vick defeated Carthage's Giana Apostoli and Sam Ramsey, 8-3 in the match at No. 1 doubles. The Thunder No. 2 doubles team of
Alexandra Wachs and
Bethany Hoogerheide picked up an 8-3 victory against the Carthage tandem of Luana Da Silva and Sasha Manojlovic.
Hoogerheide extended Wheaton's match lead to 3-1 when she picked up Wheaton's first singles win at No. 3 singles. Hoogerheide defeated DaSilva 6-0, 6-0. VIck increased the lead to 4-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Ramsey at No. 2 singles.
Sarah Backer secured the win for the Thunder when she gave the hosts their fifth point in the match score. Backer defeated Sierra Sonnemaker 6-3, 6-3 in their match at No. 4 singles.
Lydia Adams tallied Wheaton's sixth point with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles.
The Thunder travel for a pair of conference matches this weekend. The squad travels to Illinois Wesleyan on Friday for a match at 3:30 p.m. in Bloomington. Wheaton is at Millikin on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.Â
