St. Louis, Mo. - The Wheaton women's soccer team took to the road on Friday for a non-conference match at third-ranked WashU. The Bears (6-0-1) scored a pair of second-half goals to earn a 2-0 victory against the Thunder.
This afternoon's contest was the first of four-consecutive road contests for Wheaton (2-5-1). The Thunder open CCIW play in its next match, a meeting with Augustana in Rock Island at 7:00 p.m. next Wednesday. Next Wednesday's match is followed by road contests at Carroll (October 2) and at North Park (October 6).
Today's match in St. Louis was scoreless at halftime. The Bears out-shot Thunder 11-2 in the opening half. Thunder goalkeeper
Lauren Ketchum made four saves in the first half.
WashU put a goal on the scoreboard at 59:55 into the match. Tyler Wilson scored the go-ahead goal for the hosts with an assist from Ariana Miles. Emily Kaufman of the Bears converted a penalty kick at the 68:07 mark of the match to extend her team's lead to 2-0. WashU maintained the 2-0 advantage for the remainder of the match.
The Bears out-shot Wheaton 25-4 in the match, and the hosts had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Ketchum made 11 saves and allowed two goals in her 90 minutes in net. WashU goalkeeper Sidney Conner made two saves in posting a shutout for the hosts in 90 minutes in the Bears' net.
