Wheaton, Ill. - The No. 4 seed Thunder men's tennis team hosted No. 5 seed Millikin University (6-10) on Tuesday afternoon in a first round match of the CCIW Men's Tennis Championship. The Thunder defeated the Big Blue 6-0.
Wheaton is now 8-4 on the season. The Thunder advance to a CCIW Championship Semifinal match against No. 1 seed North Central on0 Friday at noon on the campus of Elmhurst University. Friday's other semifinal will feature No. 2 Augustana against No. 3 Carthage at 3:00 p.m. The Championship Match will be on Saturday when Friday's winners face off. The winner of the CCIW Championship Match will win the conference to the upcoming NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship.
The Thunder swept through all three doubles matches in today's contest against Millikin. Wheaton's first victory in the books on Tuesday against Millikin was an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles for the Thunder team of
Alex Winters and
Jacob Panjwani against Cory Erickson and James Broach. Wheaton's
Anderson Park and
Jack Wenzel teamed up for an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles against the Millikin tandem of Clayton Maack and Holden Owens. The Thunder extended the team score to 3-0 when the No. 1 doubles team of
Cody Ching and
Joey Geisz completed their 8-4 victory against the Big Blue duo of Nick Laramee and Jacob Palley.
Jacob Panjwani earned Wheaton's first victory in singles action with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Justin Caldwell at No. 6 singles. Wheaton locked up the team win with victories at No. 1 singles and No. 5 singles that concluded at the same time. Park was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 1 singles against Palley. Winters earned a 6-2, 7-5 win against Erickson in their match at No. 6 singles.
