Elmhurst, Ill. - The Wheaton men's tennis team, the No. 4 seed, faced No. 1 seed North Central College on Friday in a semifinal match of the 2021 CCIW Men's Tennis Championship on the campus of Elmhurst University. The Cardinals (11-5) defeated the Thunder 5-0. Wheaton ends the 2021 season with an 8-5 overall record.
North Central took an early 3-0 lead by sweeping through the doubles matches. The Thunder No. 1 doubles team of
Cody Ching and
Joey Geisz fell to North Central's Guillermo Gonzalez and Andy Hinch 8-5. The North Central tandem of Javier Suarez and Ramon Villaroig defeated
Anderson Park and
Jack Wenzel 8-6 in their match at No. 2 doubles. The Cardinals' No. 3 doubles team of Morgan Red and Justin Howes bested the Thunder tandem of
Jacob Panjwani and
Alex Winters 8-4.
North Central's Andy Hinch earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Wheaton's
Joey Geisz in their match at No. 4 singles. The Cardinals' Steven Mears secured the win for North Central with a victory at No. 6 singles. Mears defeated Wheaton's
Graham Shelton, 6-1, 6-0 to advance NCC to the Finals tomorrow afternoon at Elmhurst.
