Big inning proves costly in 12-5 loss to Wabash

Tucson, Ariz. - Wheaton's five-game winning streak to open the season came to an end on Monday morning with a 12-5 loss to Wabash College in Tucson. Wheaton led early but could not slow down a red-hot Wabash offense that scored multiple runs in four of their eight at-bats. Both teams finished day with a record of 5-1 and will face each other again in a Friday doubleheader beginning at 4 pm.

Wabash rolled to 12 runs on 17 hits and did not commit an error. Wheaton tallied five runs on seven hits with three errors. Christian Bolhuis took the loss on the mound for the Thunder, surrendering seven runs on 12 hits in four innings of work.

The Thunder took advantage of some shaky pitching early in the game, capitalizing on a pair of walks in the top of the first to push across runs on a bunt single by Sam Reichert and another on a sacrifice fly by Connor Hartman. Wabash pulled even with two runs in the bottom of the second inning but Wheaton reclaimed the lead in the next half inning when Joel Pierce doubled home Graham Core and later scored on Reichert's sacrifice fly. Wabash answered quickly with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the third and took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 7-4.

Ben Weaver singled home Reicert in the top of the seventh inning to pull the Thunder within 7-5, but the Little Giants blew the game open in the bottom of the seventh, striking for five runs to pull out to to the final 12-5 margin.

Sam Reichert continued his hot start to the season with another two-hit game, driving in two runs and scoring once. Graham Core and Joel Pierce each scored twice with Core adding a stolen base.
