Hanover Park, Ill. - The Wheaton men's tennis team (1-0) opened its 2020 season on Friday night at Centre Court Athletic Club with a 9-0 victory against University of St. Francis (Ill.).
The Thunder swept the Fighting Saints (0-2) in the three doubles matches on Friday. Wheaton's first win of the night was an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles for the Thunder tandem of
Nathan Fruh and
Jacob Panjwani against the St. Francis team of Thomas Schieffer and Oscar Tellez.
Anderson Park and
Jack Wenzel earned an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles against the Fighting Saints' Martin Rayos del Sol,Martin and Fernando Turiel. The third Thunder win in doubles competition was accomplished by the No. 1 doubles team of
Andrew Bristol and
Jeremiah Yi as they earned an 8-6 victory against the USF team of Avilash Mishra and Miguel Rayos del Sol.
Fruh opened up singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles against Fernando Turiel of St. Francis. Wenzel followed up with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles against Martin Rayos del Sol. Bristol was the third Thunder player to secure a singles victory as he earned a 6-0, 6-0 win against Diego Quevedo at No. 6 singles. Panjwani earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Schieffer in their matchup at No. 5 singles. Park was a 6-1, 6-3 winner against Mishra at No. 1 singles. Yi closed out the match for the Thunder as he rallied to earn a 6-7, 6-1, 10-7 victory at No. 2 singles against Miguel Rayos del Sol.
The Thunder returns to action next weekend with matches against UW-Whitewater, Grinnell and Luther at the UW-Whitewater Tournament in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
