Hanover Park, Illinois - The Wheaton women's tennis team played its first match of the spring schedule on Saturday afternoon with a matchup against Calvin University (3-3). The Thunder defeated the Knights 9-0 at Centre Court Athletic Club. Wheaton improves to 11-1 on the season.
Wheaton first victory of the match was an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles for the Thunder tandem of
Bethany Hoogerheide and
Emme Lindquist against Calvin's Cameron Cyrus and Sydney Ellsworth.
Claire Browning and
Abygale Ahn earned an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles against the Knights' team of Alexis Bonner and Emily Schellenboom. The third Thunder win in doubles action was an 8-3 victory for
Nicole Freeman and
Claire Dibble against Calvin's No. 2 doubles team of Maya Klopfenstein and Grace Bowen.
Hoogerheide picked up Wheaton's first singles win as she was a 6-1, 6-0 winner against Calvin's Carrie Scofield at No. 6 singles. Dibble was a 6-2, 6-1 victor at No. 3 singles against Schellenboom. Ahn picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles against Cyrus. Freeman defeated Bonner 6-0, 6-3 in their matchup at No. 4 singles. Browning defeated Klopfenstein 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Wheaton's final win of the afternoon was a 7-6 (8-5), 7-5 win for Lindquist against Brown in their matchup at No. 2 singles.
Wheaton is off until March 11 when the Thunder plays its first match in Florida during a three-match trip over Wheaton's Spring Break. Wheaton opens the trip against St. Mary's (Ind.).
