Ada, Ohio - The Wheaton women's soccer team, ranked ninth in the United Soccer Coaches Division III preseason poll, earned a 2-1 win under sunny skies at Ohio Northern University on Saturday afternoon. Wheaton improves to 4-0-0 on the season with today's win and the Polar Bears are now 2-1-1 for the 2019 campaign.
Ohio Northern's Megan Breier collected a long through ball from Jenna Fuller just 46-seconds into the match an Breier put the ball in the back of the net to give the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead. A Thunder corner kick midway through the first half found freshman
Sarah Max who collected the ball in a scrum and registered her first collegiate goal to tie the match at 1-1 at the 25:25 mark of the match. Max's goal was assisted by sophomore
Sara Bakke.
Wheaton scored the go-ahead goal just a few minutes before the halftime intermission. A cross found the head of junior
Isabelle Oliver who headed the ball into the net at the 42:13 mark to give Wheaton a 2-1 lead. Oliver's goal was setup on a double-assist by
Tori Seeland and
Aeva Graber.
The Thunder out-shot Ohio Northern 12-5 in the first half, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Wheaton held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes of the match.
The second half was a scoreless contest. Wheaton held a 5-3 advantage in shots, with a 1-0 edge for the Thunder in shots on goal. The Polar Bears had three corner kicks in the second half and Wheaton was awarded two.

Pete Felske noted after the match, "Today's match was a character builder. We moved the ball crisply today. I thought we played with poise even though we gave up the early goal." He concluded, "Overall the matches this weekend were good building blocks for us."
Wheaton goalkeeper
Lauren Ketchum made three saves and allowed one goal in her 90 minutes of action in the Thunder net. Ohio Northern goalkeeper Meagan Grierson made four saves and allowed both Wheaton goals in her 90 minutes of work for the hosts.
Wheaton out-shot the Polar Bears 17-8, including a 6-4 Thunder advantage in shots on goal.
The Thunder host Calvin College on September 11 at Joe Bean Stadium. Wednesday's match against the Knights begins at 6:00 p.m.
