Lake Forest, Ill. - A wild scramble in front of the net finally brought an end to a wide open game on Tuesday afternoon with the Thunder men's soccer team defeated Lake Forest College 1-0 in double overtime. Playing their first match as a ranked team since the end of the 2015 season, the 19th-ranked Thunder earned their first road victory of the season and improved to 6-2-1 on the season. The Forresters fall to 2-5-1 with the loss. Wheaton will be on the road again on Saturday night, when the Thunder travel to Elmhurst to begin CCIW play with a 7:30 pm kickoff at Langhorst Field.
Hasten Biddlecome was terrific in goal yet again for the Thunder, turning away three shots in a shutout effort. Lake Forest's Jan Roessler made seven saves and matched the Thunder junior for much of the match as both keepers denied multiple threatening scoring opportunities. Wheaton outshot Lake Forest 18-13 including a 5-2 advantage in overtime chances.
Wheaton earned a 6-3 first half shot advantage as both teams spent the majority of the opening frame sizing up their opponent and searching for attacking opportunities. Play opened up after halftime with the hosts holding a slim 8-7 shot advantage as both goalies were on full display. The Lake Forest defense stepped up in the 71st minute, blocking a shot attempt by
Joey Sopikiotis before Roessler denied
Stafford Dowling's attempt to thwart a promising chance. Lake Forest's best chance came in 74th minute when Gaston Aubert's shot from the right edge of the box rattled high off the right post and deflected out wide to the left and away.
Dowling found himself with a golden opportunity in the 94th minute when a cross from the left side said across the box and found him unmarked five yards away from goal. However, the Forrester defense rallied quickly, forcing Dowling to dodge a defender and allowing Roessler to gain position to make the save. With both teams pushing for the win in the second overtime period, Lake Forest came streaming down the left side with numbers and sent a pass toward the middle of the box which found the running head of Patrick Limanowka, but Biddlecome was perfectly positioned to collect Limanowka's deflecting header with ease.
The game's only goal came out of the midfield with
Christian Holland sending a long ball into the box where it was sent over the head of Roessler by
Joey Sopikiotis and out to the right post. With the defense converging,
Silas Galvao went airborn to send a header back towards the mouth of goal that bounced twice and barely cleared the goal line before the Forrester defense was able to get a sliding clearance out of the net, but not before the assistant referee's flag raised to signal the game-ending goal.
