Elmhurst, Ill. – The No. 19 Wheaton men's soccer team lost 4-2 at Elmhurst College on Saturday night in the CCIW opener for both teams. Wheaton is now 6-3-1 on the season. Elmhurst improves to 7-3-1 overall and 1-0-0 in CCIW play.
Elmhurst scored three time in the first half to lead 3-0 at halftime. James Serrano scored the Bluejays' first goal in the 21
st minute on a Noah Backhaus assist. Keegan Thompson tallied the hosts' second goal in the 29
th minute off of Backhaus' second assist. Backhous extended Elmhurst's lead to 3-0 when he converted a penalty kick in the 44
th minute.
Michael Groza (PICTURED ABOVE) tallied Wheaton's first goal just 3:01 into the second half to trim the Bluejays' lead to 3-1 in the 49
th minute. Elmhurst's Keegan Thompson scored in the 62
nd minute to extend the hosts' lead to 4-1. Thunder senior
Will Woodfin scored his third goal of the season in the 86
th minute to account for the 4-2 final score.
Drew Cammarano started in goal for the Thunder, making one save with four goals allowed. Elmhurst netminder Donnie Kvien registered five saves and allowed two goals.
Wheaton held a 9-7 advantage in shots in the match, including a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. Elmhurst was awarded six corner kicks in the match and Wheaton had four.
The Thunder return to Joe Bean Stadium on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. for a conference match against North Central.
