Wheaton baseball drops rubber match at Carthage

Kenosha, Wis. - The Thunder baseball team dropped the rubber match of its three-game series with the Carthage College Red Men, falling 10-0 in seven innings on Wednesday night. The victory for the Red Men snapped an eight-game losing skid while Wheaton had its three-game win streak snapped while falling to 21-11 on the year. Wheaton will step out of conference play on Thursday night for a non-conference matchup against Aurora University, which has been moved up to a 5 pm start at Lee Pfund Stadium.

Carthage tallied its ten runs on 15 hits with no errors while Wheaton was held to just five hits by Dante Guarascio who struck out five in a complete game effort for the Red Men.

Wheaton squandered several early scoring opportunities, wasting a leadoff double by Nick Mailman in the top of the first inning and stranding him at third base. The Thunder also stranded runners at second and third inning with a pair of strikeouts to end the inning in the top of the second inning.

Carthage did not waste its early opportunities, ambushing Thunder starter Kevin Champlin for three quick runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning and adding a solo home run in the bottom of the second to lead 4-0. After holding the Red Mend off the scoreboard in the third inning, Carthage added one run in the fourth and blew it open with four runs in the bottom of the fifth while adding another solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

After leaving another two runners on base in the top of the third inning, Guarascio faced the minimum over his final four innings of work, allowing only a Brett Albaugh single, which was erased on a double play.

Albaugh led the Thunder offense with a hit and a walk. Nick Mailman tallied Wheaton's only extra base hit with a double to left field to start the game.
