Baseball falls 4-1 in nonconference matchup with Aurora

Carol Stream, Ill. - Two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings broke a pitcher's duel as Aurora University claimed a 4-1 victory over the Thunder baseball team on Thursday game in a nonconference game. Aurora improves to 24-6 with the victory while Wheaton falls to 21-12. Wheaton will continue its schedule with a nonconference doubleheader against #13-ranked WashU on Saturday at Lee Pfund Stadium beginning at 3 pm.

Aurora scored its four runs on seven hits and Wheaton tallied one run on five hits while neither team committed an error. Sam Arnold took the loss for the Thunder, surrendering three runs on six hits with two strikeouts over six innings of work. Nick Malmberg earned the win for the Spartans, allowing the one run on five hits in seven innings of work with seven strikeouts. Michael Fidler pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.

Arnold and Malmberg locked up in a pitcher's duel over the first five innings with both surrendering just one hit. The Spartans broke through in the top of the sxith inning, scoring two runs on four singles to take the lead. The Spartans added two more runs in the top of the seventh on a two-out, two-run double to lead 4-0.

Wheaton got on the board in the bottom of the seventh starting with Ben Brittain's bunt single before he scored two batters later on Brett Albaugh's RBI single. Wheaton would strand two in the seventh in what would be their final rally of the night as the Spartans closed out the win.
