Decatur, Ill. - The Wheaton men's basketball team earned an 86-53 victory in CCIW play on Saturday afternoon at Millikin University (1-8, 0-2 CCIW). Wheaton improves to 6-2 overall with a 2-0 record in CCIW play. The Thunder remain on the road Tuesday night for a non-conference matchup at Calvin University.
Sophomore guard
Tyson Cruickshank led all players with a game-high 20 points, shooting 80-percent (8-of-10) from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. He added six rebounds and three assists.
Nyameye Adom contributed 17 points for the guests on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. Senior
Anajuwon Spencer scored 10 points with four rebounds and two steals. Freshman guard
Andrew Williams scored 10 points, with two steals, off the Thunder bench.
Collin Uveges scored nine points and he distributed a team-high five assists.
Cade Alioth had eight points, with two assists.
Wheaton shot a season-high 57.4% (35-of-61) field goal percentage in Decatur, including 42.1% (8-of-19) from three-point range. The Big Blue shot 33.3% (18-of-54) from the field, including a 20% (3-of-15) effort behind the three-point arc. The Thunder posted a 72.7% (8-of-11) free throw percentage and Millikin shot 70% (14-of-20) at the charity stripe. Wheaton out-rebounded the Big Blue 39-28, with each team collecting eight offensive rebounds. The Thunder dominated the inside game, out-scoring Millikin 54-24 in the paint.
Michael Akinwumi and Cedric Mitchell each led the Big Blue with 10 points apiece. Cole Laurence led the hosts in rebounding with six boards.
Wheaton quickly jumped out to a 20-6 lead in the first seven minutes of the first half. The Thunder led by double digits for the remainder of the opening half. Wheaton led by as many as 17 points in the first 20 minutees, the final 17-point bulge was a 29-12 Wheaton lead 5:28 remaining in the first half. The guests led the Big Blue 33-23 at the halftime intermission.
Wheaton was stellar offensively in the second half. The Thunder shot 66.7% (22-of-33) from the field in the final 20 minutes, including 50% (5-for-10) from three-point range. Wheaton's 33-point lead in the 86-53 final score was the largest lead of the game for the guests.
