Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Wheaton men's basketball team earned a non-conference victory at Calvin University (3-5) on Tuesday night. The Thunder topped the Knights 67-67 to give Wheaton its third-consecutive road win. Wheaton improves to 7-2 on the season.
Nyameye Adom led the Thunder with 20 points tonight, adding six assists.
Tyson Cruickshank scored 17 points with three assists and
Collin Uveges tallied 11 points with three assists and two steals.
Anajuwon Spencer scored eight points and blocked three shots, while
Andrew Williams also scored eight points. Junior
Cade Alioth (PICTURED LEFT) grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds and added seven points for the guests. Alioth had 15 of Wheaton's 37 rebounds in the game.
Wheaton posted a 48.1% (25-of-52) field goal percentage, including 50% (6-of-12) from three-point range. The Knights shot 32.8% (19-of-58) from the field, including 19% (4-for-21) behind the three-point arc. Wheaton had a 71.4% (20-of-28) effort at the free throw line and the Knights shot 83.3% (25-of-30) at the charity stripe. Behind Alioth's effort tonight, Wheaton out-rebounded the Knights 37-32. Calvin had a 10-8 advantage on the offensive glass.
Derrick DeVries led Calvin with 25 points and six rebounds. Thad Shymanski added 22 points and four assists for the hosts. Alex Bos grabbed a team-high eight rebounds for Calvin.Â
Calvin jumped out to an early 7-1 lead in the first three minutes of the game. The Knight's continued to lead, building a 10-point advantage at 16-6 with 13:56 remaining in the first half, with Wheaton taking a timeout. Uveges made a layup following the timeout to spark eight unanswered points for the Thunder. Wheaton's 8-0 run was capped off by a traditional three-point play for Adom with 12:28 left in the first half to cut Calvin's lead to 16-14.Â
Calvin led 25-18 with 7:45 remaining in the first half when Alioth scored on a tip-in, followed by a three-pointer from
Gavin Hawkins on Wheaton's next possession to trim the Knights' lead to 25-23 with 7:21 remaining before halftime. Adom scored with four seconds left in the first half, allowing Wheaton to hold a 39-38 lead at halftime.
The Thunder scored the first seven points of the second half to build up a 46-38 lead with 18:31 remaining in the game. Wheaton built its lead to a nine-point advantage at 49-40 with 17:22 left in the game, however, the Knights responded with seven unanswered points to trim Wheaton's advantage to two points at 49-47 with 15:35 left in the game. The closest Calvin could get was tying the contest at 54-54 with 11:53 remaining. The Thunder held a one-point lead at 62-61 with 5:13 left in the game when Spencer drained a three-pointer to increase the guests' advantage to 65-61. Spencer's trifecta sparked a 14-6 Wheaton run to close out the half as Wheaton emerged with the win.
Wheaton returns to conference play on Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. tipoff at home against North Park. Saturday's contest against the Vikings will be Wheaton's first home game since a
victory against Olivet College on November 23.
