Women's soccer ties Augustana, 0-0 in CCIW Semis; Vikings advance to CCIW Final in a shootout

Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton Thunder women's soccer team, the No. 1 seed in the 2019 CCIW Women's Soccer Tournament, hosted No. 4 seed Augustana on Wednesday night at Joe Bean Stadium in CCIW Tournament Semifinal. The two teams played to a 0-0 draw at the end of two overtimes. Under CCIW Tournament rules, a shootout was held to determine the advancing team. Augustana made all four of its shots in the shootout as the Vikings advanced to Saturday's championship match with a 4-2 advantage in the shootout.

Augustana (10-3-3) advances to play at No. 2 seed Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday in the CCIW Tournament Championship Match. Wheaton  is now 16-1-2 on the season.

Wheaton out-shot the Vikings 16-0 in the first half, including a 10-0 advantage in shots on goal. Augustana goalkeeper Sydney Ion made 10 saves in the first 45 minutes of the match.

Rain began in the second half, with increasing wind, and continued throughout the remainder of the match. Opportunities for both teams evened out in the second half as the Thunder had an 8-3 advantage in shots. Each team had three shots on goal in the second half. Ion made three saves and Wheaton goalkeeper Lauren Ketchum stopped three shots. 

Wheaton had three shots in the first overtime period, with two shots on goal. Ion made two more saves in the opening overtime.

The Thunder out-shot the Vikings, 3-1 in the second overtime. Each team had a shot on goal in the final period. Ion and Ketchum each made one save in the second overtime.

In the match, Wheaton out-shot the Vikings 30-4, including a 16-4 edge in shots on goal. Wheaton was awarded nine corner kicks in the match and Augustana attempted one.

Ketchum made four saves in 110 minutes of action. Ion stopped 16 shots in 110 minutes of play.

Each team made each of their first two shot attempts, as the shootout was tied at 2-2, heading into the third round. Wheaton's third attempt was stopped by Ion and Augustana's third shot was converted by Sandra Camarillo to give the Vikings a 3-2 lead in the shoot out. Wheaton's fourth shot attempt was wide of the net. Grace Sigler of the Vikings put her attempt in the back of the net to give Augustana a decisive 4-2 advantage and secure the advancement for her team.

Wheaton will be a likely at-large selection to the upcoming NCAA Division III NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament when bids are announced on Monday, November 11 at 12:00 p.m. (CST). Selections and brackets will be announced at NCAA.com.
