Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton Thunder women's soccer team defeated Webster University on Friday in a first round match of the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament. Wheaton advances to the second round on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Joe Bean Stadium.
Wheaton gradually took control of the match in the first half. Wheaton's first goal came on a long shot by
Jensen Ellis (VIDEO). Ellis' shot was went over the head of Webster goalkeeper Taryn Banfield as Ellis collected her eighth goal of the season.
The Thunder led the Gorloks 1-0 at halftime. Wheaton out-shot Webster 18-4 in the first half, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Sara Bakke's cross at the 55:13 mark of the match was deflected into the goal to give Wheaton a 2-0 lead
(VIDEO). The goal was the fifth of the season for Bakke.
Isabelle Oliver scored at 64:53 to increase Wheaton's lead to 3-0. Oliver's goal from the edge of the penalty box was assisted by
Hannah Max (VIDEO).
The Thunder out-shot Webster 17-7 in the second half, including a 7-0 edge in shots on goal.
Wheaton's starting goalkeeper,
Lauren Ketchum made three saves in 68 minutes of action. Thunder goalkeeper
Madison Lee played 22 minutes in net for the hosts. Webster goalkeeper Taryn Banfield made 13 saves and allowed three goals in 90 minutes of action.
Wheaton out-shot the Gorloks 35-11, including 16-3 edge in shots on goal. Wheaton was awarded 10 corner kicks in the match and Webster attempted two.
