Women's basketball falls to University of Chicago, 73-64 in a battle of ranked teams

Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton women's basketball team hosted University of Chicago (2-2) on Wednesday night in a matchup featuring ranked teams. The Maroons topped the Thunder, 73-64.

Wheaton is ranked 14th in the current D3hoops.com Top-25 poll and Chicago is 18th in the same poll. Wheaton (4-1) is ranked 16th in the current Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division III Top-25 poll, while Chicago is receiving votes in the poll.

Hannah Williams returned to the Thunder lineup on Wednesday an led Wheaton with a team-high 17 points, making three three-pointers. She also grabbed four rebounds with three assists. Bonnie Zeller scored eight points off the Wheaton bench on 3-of-3 shooting from the field, making a pair of three-pointers. Jordan Myroth scored eight points, grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Myroth also distributed seven assists with two steals. Kristi Demski scored eight points and Kirsten Madsen tallied eight points with three assists. Hannah Frazier scored six points, with six rebounds and three blocked shots.

Wheaton shot 44.1% (25-of-69) from the field, including 38.1% (8-for-21) from three-point range. The Maroons posted a 40.6% (26-of-64) field goal percentage, including a 34.4% (11-for-32) effort behind the three-point arc. Wheaton shot 50% (4-of-8) at the free throw line, while the Maroons had a 58.8% (10-of-17) effort at the charity stripe. UChicago out-rebounded the Thunder 42-33, including a 15-7 edge on the offensive glass. Chicago's edge in offensive rebounds aided the Maroons to a 12-2 edge in second-chance points.

Taylor Lake led Chicago with 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Grace Hynes scored 15 points with nine rebounds for the Maroons. Miranda Burt and Mia Farrell each scored 13 points for the guests.

Chicago built up a 14-7 lead with 2:00 left in the first quarter. However, Wheaton out-scored the Maroons 8-3 in the final two minutes of the opening quarter to trim Chicago's lead to 17-5 at the conclusion of the first quarter. Chicago dominated play in the second quarter out-scoring the Thunder 18-8. The Maroons led 35-23 at halftime.

Chicago continued its strong play in the third quarter as the Maroons led by as many as 17 points. The guests led Wheaton 54-40 at the end of the third quarter.

Wheaton furiously rallied in the fourth quarter. Williams made a basket to start Wheaton's scoring in the final quarter. Zeller and Williams made back-to-back three-pointers to trim Chicago's lead to six points at 54-48 with 7:58 remaining in the game. A three-pointer by Zeller with 6:57 left in the contest cut the Maroons' lead to four points at 54-50. The two teams traded three-pointers on their next respective possessions. The four-point deficit in Chicago's 57-53 lead with 6:00 left in the game was the closest Wheaton got to the lead for the remainder of the contest.

The Thunder return to action November 26 at Dominican University in a non-conference game against the Stars.
