Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton Thunder volleyball team defeated Carroll, 3-0 on Wednesday night in CCIW action. The Thunder won the first set 25-18, followed by a 25-22 victory in the second set and a 25-21 win in the third set. Wheaton improves to 16-11 overall and 3-5 in CCIW play.
Sophomore
Colleen Smith led the Thunder with 12 kills and she added two service aces. Senior
Ellie Brown had nine kills on just 14 swings as she posted a .500 attack percentage.
Audrey Gerze had six kills and
Sadie Elsenbroek had five.
Alecia Funk had 18 assists and
Marlee Anderson distributed 16. Freshman
Allie High led the Thunder with 19 digs. Gerze had 12 digs and three service aces.
Kaylee Byerly and
Ellie Brown each had three total blocks.
Wheaton won the first set 25-18. The Thunder jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the opening set. Carroll briefly gained a one point lead at 8-7, however, Wheaton put together an 8-1 run to take 15-9 lead. The Thunder never trailed in the remainder of the set.
Colleen Smith led the Thunder with four kills in the set and Gerze had eight digs.
The Thunder earned a 25-22 victory in the second set. Wheaton led the Pioneers 16-10, however, the Pioneers gradually cut into the Wheaton lead and eventually gained its first lead of the set a 21-20. A kill by Carroll's Kylie Mueller gave the guests a 22-21 lead, their final point in the set. A pair of kills by
Colleen Smith gave Wheaton a 23-22 lead. A kill by Brown gave Wheaton a 24-22 lead and a service ace by Gerze closed out the set at 25-22 as Wheaton rallied with a 4-0 run to win the set.
Colleen Smith had six kills in the set, with a .316 attack percentage. High added nine digs.
Wheaton closed out the match by winning the third set 25-21. Carroll gained an early 8-5 lead in the set. The Thunder responded with an 8-1 run to take a 13-9 lead, and the hosts never trailed after that point. Gerze had a team-high three kills in the set and
Allie High had five digs.
Wheaton closes out the regular season on Friday at the Benedictine Tri-Match with contests against Benedictine and Rockford.
