Wheaton, Ill. – Augustana College (10-12, 4-3 CCIW) defeated the Wheaton Thunder volleyball team 3-1 on Tuesday night in King Arena. Wheaton (13-9, 2-4 CCIW) won the first set 25-20 and Augustana rallied for a 25-22 win in the second set. The Vikings won the third set 25-23 and the guests closed out the win with a 27-25 victory in the fourth set.
Deborah Smith led Wheaton with 14 kills and .414 attack percentage.
Colleen Smith had 10 kills, with 11 digs and four service aces.
Audrey Gerze and
Emma Sweatman each had seven kills and
Ellie Brown tallied six kills.
Marlee Anderson distributed 22 assists and
Alecia Funk had 19.
Allie High tallied 22 digs and
Kaylee Byerly had five total blocks.
Wheaton won the first set 25-20.
Colleen Smith registered four kills with two service aces in the set. High led the Thunder with four digs. The Thunder gained an early 11-4 lead in the set and never trailed after the substantial lead early.
Augustana rallied to win the second set 25-22.
Deborah Smith tallied four kills in the set. High added six digs and
Cassie Swiderek had four digs. Wheaton jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the set and its largest lead of the set was 21-12. The Vikings responded with a 13-1 scoring surge to rally for the win.
The Vikings earned a 25-23 victory in the third set.
Emma Sweatman and
Deborah Smith each had three kills in the set for the Thunder. High had nine digs, with five for Funk and four for
Audrey Gerze. Wheaton snapped a 9-9 tie in the third set with three-consecutive points to take a 12-9 lead. Augustana responded with a 6-1 run to take a 15-13 lead. Wheaton gradually cut into the Vikings' lead to the set at 23-23. The Vikings scored the final two points of the set to earn the 25-23 victory.
The Vikings won the fourth set 27-25. The set was tied at 18-18 when the Vikings scored three-consecutive points to take a 21-18 lead. Wheaton rallied by out-scoring the guests 6-3 to take a 25-24 lead. The Vikings rallied to win the next three points to win the set 27-25 and the match 3-1.
Wheaton returns to action next Tuesday at Illinois Wesleyan.
