Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer wins fifth-straight with 2-0 shutout at Augustana

Rock Island, Ill. - The Thunder women's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to six matches and registered its fifth-straight win on Saturday night with a 2-0 victory at Augustana College. The victory moves Wheaton to 12-1-1 overall and 4-0 in the CCIW. The loss drops the Vikings to 7-2-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Wheaton will be in action again on Saturday, October 19, when the Thunder travel to North Central.

Wheaton bombarded the Vikings with 24 shots on Saturday evening while allowing just five attempts by the hosts. Sydney Ion stopped seven shots and allowed two goal for the Vikings. Lauren Ketchum stopped all three of Augustana's shots on goal.

Ion was forced into early action, recording her first two saves of the night in the opening 90 seconds of play. Wheaton continued to push the play forward, unleashing 17 of its 24 shots in the opening frame. With Ion up to the task early it took until the 39th minute before Wheaton was able to crack the Viking defense. Carney Blake tallied Wheaton's first marker at the 38:51 mark of the first half off an Isabelle Oliver assist for the first score of the match.

A quick turnover turned Wheaton loose at the Viking net again just 17 seconds after the goal, but a big save by Ion held the score at 1-0 until halftime.

Augustana was able to bottle up the Thunder attack early, keeping Wheaton away from the front of their own goal until Jensen Ellis found the net in the 72nd minute to provide the 2-0 lead, which stood as the final score.

Wheaton was held to just seven shots in the second half with the Vikings turning loose three shots, the last of which was saved by Ketchum in the final minute of play to preserve the clean sheet.
