Albion, Mich. - The Thunder men's soccer survived its first road test of the season on Tuesday night, earning a 2-2 draw at Albion College. Wheaton jumped out to an early lead but surrendered two quick goals after a red card late in the first half put Wheaton down a man. With the draw, Wheaton's record stands at 1-0-1 overall while Albion's record moves to 2-0-1. Wheaton will return home for its next match, hosting Concordia-Chicago at 7 pm on Monday.
Wheaton jumped out to a quick lead on Tuesday night, striking first on
Peter Whallon's first goal of the season in third minute. Wheaton would add to that lead 20 minutes later when
Chad Miller found
AJ Moyes, leading the sophomore to his second goal of the season, putting Wheaton ahead 2-0.
Albion's Alex Spratte single-handedly brought the Britons level, stealing the momentum with a goal just 12 seconds prior to halftime. Just minutes into the second half, the field tilted toward the Britons when
Jaxon Hulse was given a red card with 42 minutes remaining. Spratte struck three minutes with his third goal of the season, tying the game at 2-2.
Under attack through the middle part of the second half, Wheaton was able to level the field as the half wore on and forced the game to overtime. The first overtime period provided wide-open play but resulted in no shots.
Hasten Biddlecome's sixth save of the night came in the 102nd minute, stopping the only shot of the second overtime and the last scoring chance of the night.
Playing with the man-advantage for 62 minutes, Albion outshot the Thunder 12-7 and earned a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. A physical game throughout saw both teams penalized for 17 fouls with the Britions collecting four yellow cards and Wheaton receiving three bookings including the red card to Hulse.
