Wheaton, Ill. - The Thunder men's soccer team returned to action on Monday night with a dominant victory over Concordia-Chicago in the first-ever meeting between the two schools in men's soccer. Wheaton for the second time in its first three games, Wheaton saw four different goal scorers scratch the stat sheet as Wheaton cruised to a 4-0 shutout to improve to 2-0-1 on the season. The Cougars fall to 1-2 with the loss. Wheaton will be back in action on Wednesday night when the Thunder travel to #3-ranked University of Chicago for a 7 pm kickoff.
The Thunder dominated the action on Monday night, outshooting the Cougars 23-1 including an 8-1 edge in shots on goal.
Hasten Biddlecome earned the win in goal for Wheaton, stopping one shot in 66:49 of work. Panagiotis Zervas stopped four shots and allowed four goals in net for the Cougars.
Wheaton took control of the action from the opening kickoff, probing the Concordia-Chicago defense with a patient possession attack and waiting for their opportunity to present itself. In turn, the Cougar defense was well organized through the first half hour of play, keeping Wheaton off the scoreboard despite a consistent offensive attack from the hosts. Wheaton's opportunity finally presented itself in the 36th minute when
Drew Beamer sent a beautiful pass from the midfield line, sending
Ryan Melgar into the box, where Melgar worked himself free of the Cougar defense and beat Zervas to the far post for a 1-0 lead that would last to the halftime break.

The second half saw the Thunder continue its possession game, leading to a beautiful goal early in the half. Playing out to the left wing,
Michael Martens beat the Concordia-Chicago defense to the end line and sent a crossing pass on the ground through the six-yard box where it was touched on at the near post by
AJ Moyes to a wide-open
Shane Kopplin (PICTURED RIGHT) who tapped home his second goal of the season for a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute.
Ten minutes later it was
Miseker Wingate creating an attack down the left side by weaving through the defense of the Cougars and finding
Joey Sopikiotis in the middle of the field. Sopikiotis blasted a right-footed attempt from the top of the 18-yard box that rattled the crossbar and bounced down and into the goal for his first collegiate goal. The Thunder freshman would add his first collegiate assist in the 73rd minute when he sent a ball from the right side of the box to
John Steiner who quickly moved it along to
Chase Gwynn on the left side of the box. Gwynn slotted the ball just past the oncoming Zervas for his second goal of the season and Wheaton's fourth and final goal of the night.
