Thunder rally falls short in a 7-6 loss at Carthage

Kenosha, Wis. – The Wheaton baseball team concluded its season series with Carthage College on Monday afternoon at Augie Schmidt Field on the Carthage campus. The Red Men earned a season sweep with a 7-3 victory against the Thunder.

Carthage scored seven runs, on 12 hits, with two errors and the Thunder tallied six runs, on 12 hits, with three errors. Thunder starting pitcher Sam Arnold tossed 5-1/3 innings, allowing seven runs, including four earned runs, on 12 hits, with one walk. Alex Hanvey pitched 1-2/3 innings of scoreless relief as he held Carthage hitless. Caleb Selk pitched the eighth inning, holding Carthage scoreless and without a hit.

Carthage scored one run in each of the first four innings of the game. Wheaton countered with a run in the top of the third as Nick Mailman led off the top of the third inning with a single and then stole second base. Mailman scored on a ground out by Ben Brittain to cut the hosts' lead to 2-1.

Wheaton added a run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Carthage lead to 4-2. Brittain led off the sixth inning with a single through the right side of the infield and he scored two batters later on a ground out by Joel Pierce. The Red Men countered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to increase the Carthage lead to 7-2. Wheaton added a run in the top of the eighth inning as Jesse Welch led off the top of the eighth with a double and he scored on a single by Brittain.

The Thunder offense put together a strong rally in the top of the ninth inning with three runs. Evan Ogden led off the ninth with a single and Jacob Lindstedt followed with a walk. Mailman hit a single to right field that brought Ogden home to trim the hosts' lead to 7-4. Connor Hartman hit a single through the left side of the infield that brought both Lindstedt and Mailman home; and cut the Red Men advantage to 7-6. Carthage closer Brian Polaski induced a game-ending strikeout with Hartman at second base to end the game as the hosts escaped with the 7-6 victory.

Wheaton concludes the season this weekend with a three-game series against Elmhurst College. The Thunder hosts the Bluejays Friday at 6:00 p.m. for "Senior Night" at Lee Pfund Stadium. The 2018 campaign is scheduled to conclude on Saturday with a doubleheader at Elmhurst.
