Carol Stream, Ill. - The Thunder baseball team dropped the series opener of its final series of the season on Friday night at Lee Pfund Stadium. Wheaton saw its Senior Day spoiled by a 7-3 Elmhurst victory, moving the Bluejays to 21-16 overall and 11-11 in conference play. Wheaton falls to 14-23 overall and 5-17 in CCIW games. Wheaton will conclude its schedule on Saturday with a 2 pm doubleheader at Elmhurst.
Elmhurst tallied seven runs on 11 hits with one error while Wheaton scored its three runs on nine hits with three errors.
Both teams pushed across an unearned run in the first inning before Elmhurst took the lead for good with a run in the top of the third. The Bluejays would add another run in the top of the fifth inning when Reagan McReynolds drilled a solo home run, scoring his third run of the game and putting Elmhurst ahead 3-1.
Elmurst broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning with three runs on four hits to take a 6-1 lead. An RBI single by
Jesse Welch in the bottom of the sixth cut the lead to 6-2. Wheaton looked to cut further into the lead when
Johnny Peltz drilled a line drive to center but Wheaton's rally was thwarted when Peltz was robbed by a tremendous catch in center field to end the inning.
The Bluejays pushed across their final run in the top of the ninth inning and Wheaton answered with a run of their own when
Seth Meyer hit a towering home run to left field with two outs, accounting for the 7-3 final score.
