Waukesha, Wis. - The Thunder baseball team dropped both ends of a CCIW doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, dropping game one 7-4 before falling 10-2 in the nightcap. With two losses, Wheaton falls to 14-21 overall and 5-15 in the CCIW. Carroll improves to 20-14 overall and 8-12 in conference games. Wheaton will be in action again on Monday night with a rescheduled game at Carthage starting at 5 pm.
Wheaton's bats were held quiet in the opener, despite a number of baserunners. Wheaton finally found the scoreboard with four runs in the top of the ninth inning with an RBI single by
Jesse Welch plating the first run.
Nick Mailman followed with an RBI single before
Graham Core dropped in another single to plate the third run of the inning. Wheaton's fourth run would come via a wild pitch, moving two runners into scoring position and brining the tying run to the plate, but Wheaton would not be able to further close the gap.
Carroll established its lead with an unearned two-out run in the bottom of the fourth inning and added two runs in the sixth and seventh innings with its final run coming on an eighth inning home run.
A Thunder error to start the bottom of the first inning put the Pioneers on the board early in the game. A third inning home run pushed the lead to 2-0, but Wheaton pushed a run across on a
Johnny Peltz groundout in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 2-1. Carroll would strike for four more runs before a double by Peltz brought in Wheaton's second run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. The Pioneers struck back with four more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the 10-2 lead and the series sweep.
