Baseball loses series opener to Carroll 5-3 in 11 innings

Carol Stream, Ill. - A back and forth contest went the way of the visiting Pioneers of Carroll University on a cold and windy Friday night at Lee Pfund Stadium. Two out runs in the top of the ninth and top of the 11th innings sunk the Thunder as Wheaton dropped the series opener 5-3 in 11 innings. Carroll improves to 18-14 overall and 6-12 in the CCIW while Wheaton falls to 14-19 overall and 5-13 in the CCIW. The two teams will complete their series with a doubleheader in Waukesha tomorrow beginning at 1 pm.

Carroll earned its victory with five runs on 10 hits with one error. Wheaton pushed across three runs on five hits with four errors. Michael McCraith took the tough no-decision, allowing two runs, none earned, over eight innings of work, scattering six hits while striking out eight batters. Nick Johnson allowed one run in one inning of relief with two strikeouts. Caleb Selk allowed two runs, one earned, in two innings.

Wheaton answered a Carroll run in the top of the third with a run in the top of the fourth inning when Seth Meyer scored on a sacrifice fly by Johnny Peltz. Jesse Welch put Wheaton in the lead in the bottom of the fifth when he led off the inning with a single before stealing second and third. Welch then came in to score when Nick Mailman was caught stealing at second base.

Carroll tied the game in the top of the seventh inning with an unearned run by Welch again sparked a rally in the bottom of the seventh, stealing second base after being hit by a pitch to lead off the ining. Mailman followed with a bunt single and quickly stole second base. After a walk to load the bases, Joel Pierce drove a sacrifice fly deep to left field to plate Welch with the go-ahead run.

A two-out single in the top of the ninth inning tied the game at 3-3, setting up Wheaton's first extra inning game of the season. After Caleb Selk threw a scoreless top of the tenth, Wheaton put the first two hitters on base in the bottom of the inning but could not bring home the game-ending run and Carroll rode the momentum to a pair of two-out runs in the top of the 11th inning to earn the 5-3 victory.
