Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton College softball team hosted Calvin College in a doubleheader on Wednesday that was re-scheduled from its original date in March. The Knights won the first game 2-1 in eight innings and Calvin earned the sweep with a 9-6 victory in the second game.
Calvin scored twice in the top of the eighth inning of the first game to earn the 2-1 victory. The Knights scored two runs, on 12 hits, with no errors and Wheaton tallied one run, on six hits, with one error. Junior
Kelly Thornton worked all eight innings in the circle for the Thunder. She allowed two runs, including one earned run, on 12 hits, with four strikeouts and one walk. Thornton was 2-for-4 at plate with a RBI, hitting a double.

The two squads played seven scoreless innings and headed to extra innings. The game utilized the international tiebreaker, placing a runner at second base to start the eighth inning for each team. Calvin tallied two runs in the top of the eight to gain a 2-0 edge.
Hannah Clark started the top of the eighth inning at second base for the Thunder and she scored on a well-hit double to right field by Thornton. Wheaton was unable to drive Thornton in from second base to tie the game as Calvin escaped with the 2-1 victory.
The Knights won the second game 9-6 as the guests scored nine runs, on 15 hits, with no errors and Wheaton tallied six runs, on seven hits, with one error.
Kendall Kehres tossed seven innings, allowing nine runs, including eight runs, on 15 hits, with one walk and one strikeout.
Thornton was 3-for-4, with a double as she drove in two runs.
Julia Arthur had a 2-for-3 effort with a double as she scored twice with a RBI.
Maddy Bonetto hit a double as she scored one run and drove in a run; and
Morgan Ryan added a double.

Calvin scored four times in the top of the first inning to take an early 4-0 lead. The Knights added three runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 7-0. Wheaton added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Knights' lead to 7-2. Arthur drove in one run in the fourth inning on a RBI-single and Bonetto belted a RBI-double to drive in Wheaton's second run in the second inning.
Megan Neuhaus (PICTURED LEFT) led off the bottom of the fifth inning with walk and scored two batters later on a ground out by
Morgan Ryan to trim the Knights' advantage to 7-3. Calvin added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning to extend the guests' lead to 9-3.
The Thunder scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Calvin lead to 9-6. Arthur led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double down the left field line and scored later in the inning on a Calvin wild pitch. Thornton belted a two-run double down the right field line to account for Wheaton's final two runs of the game.
Wheaton hosts University of Chicago on Thursday for a non-conference doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. Thursday's twinbill is the season finale for the Thunder as Wheaton honors its seniors: Arthur, Keheres and Neuhaus for "Senior Day" in between games of the doubleheader.
