Thunder baseball sweeps doubleheader with wins over Dominican and Beloit

Carol Stream, Ill.
- The Thunder baseball team bounced back from a tough loss on Thursday night with a pair of victories on Friday afternoon against Dominican University and Beloit College. Wheaton (9-6) opened the day with a 5-2 come from behind victory over Dominican (9-5) and closed the day with a 9-3 win over Beloit (7-6).

Wheaton fell behind early in game one, surrendering runs in the top of the first and third innings to trail 2-0. Wheaton made its move in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking advantage of several defensive miscues. Graham Core led off the inning with a one-out single and came around to score on Jesse Welch's single to cut the Dominican lead to 2-1. After a groundout by Brittain moved runners to second and third, Nick Mailman tied the game by scoring on a wild pitch. Welch would give the Thunder the lead, trotting home when Evan Ogden reached on an error with two outs to extend the inning.

The Thunder tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Core reached on a fielder's choice and later came in to score on a double by Welch. Jacob Garrity drove home Wheaton's final run in the bottom of the seventh, singling to right to plate pinch runner Luke Roudabush.

Ty Hoeksema improved to 4-1 on the mound, scattering seven hits and striking out seven over six innings of work. Welch threw two innings of scoreless relief and Nick Johnson nailed down his third save of the year with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning.

The Thunder offense struck quickly in the nightcap, denting the scoreboard after three batters in the bottom of the first when Mailman scored on Brittain's ground out. Johnny Peltz then doubled home Welch to make it 2-0. Pitching took center stage over the next few innings with neither team managing a rally until Wheaton loaded the bases but was unable to punch through in the bottom of the fifth.

Beloit took advantage of a pair of walks to plate two runs and tie the game in the top of the sixth inning off the Thunder bullpen. Wheaton answered immediately in the bottom of the sixth inning. Peltz started the rally with a leadoff single and scored two batters later on Seth Meyer's double to left-center. Meyer then scored along with Roudabush on Garrity's single to right-center, giving Wheaton a 5-2 lead.

Wheaton blew the game open in the bottom of the seventh, plating four runs before the Buccaneers were able to record an out. Peltz drove in two runs with a double down the left field line. Wheaton also added runs on a passed ball and an error to lead 9-2. Beloit would add an unearned run in the top of the ninth to account for the 9-3 final.

Grant Howell took the tough-luck no-decision after allowing just two hits and striking out five in five innings of work. AJ Dhus earned the win in relief, allowing one hit in 1.2 innings of work.

Wheaton will next be in action on Wednesday when the Thunder head to Naperville to open CCIW action with a doubleheader at North Central.
