Thunder baseball opens conference play with a doubleheader at North Central

The Wheaton baseball team (9-8, 0-2 CCIW) opened up conference play on Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader at North Central (6-6, 2-0 CCIW). The host Cardinals won the first game of the twinbill 10-0 and NCC earned an 8-2 victory in the second game.

North Central won today's first game 10-0 as the Cardinals scored 10 runs, on 12 hits, committing zero errors and the Thunder scored zero runs, on five hits, with four errors. Thunder starting pitcher Jacob Cassell (0-1) took the loss for Wheaton in two innings of work. He allowed three runs, on three hits. Freshman AJ Dhus worked two innings of relief, allowing five runs, including one earned run, on three hits. Junior Caleb Selk pitched 2-1/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs, on three hits.

Senior outfielder Johnny Peltz hit a pair of doubles for Wheaton in the first game. Catcher Jacob Garrity was 1-for-2. Ben Brittain and Joel Pierce each added singles for the guests.
North Central broke a 0-0 tie with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Cardinals added five runs, including four unearned runs, in the bottom of the fourth inning to break the game open and give the hosts an 8-0 lead. North Central scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to end the game at 10-0.

The Cardinals won the nightcap 8-2 as NCC scored eight runs, on 11 hits, with one error and Wheaton registered two runs, on five hits, committing four errors. Thunder starting pitcher Sam Arnold allowed five runs on five hits in 2/3 of an inning. Alex Hanvey pitched 5-2/3 innings of relief as he allowed three runs, including two earned runs, on six hits with five strikeouts. Luke Kram pitched 1-2/3 innings of scoreless relief, holding North Central hitless.

32417Seth Meyer (PICTURED LEFT) was 2-for-4 at the plate for the guests. Joel Pierce, Nick Mailman and Jesse Welch each added singles for Wheaton in the contest.

North Central scored five runs on the bottom of the first inning and added one run in the bottom of the second to take a 6-0 lead. Wheaton trimmed the hosts' lead to 6-2 with runs by Meyer and Mailman on a NCC error. The Cardinals added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to account for the 8-2 final score.

Wheaton travels to Augustana Friday for a CCIW doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. The three-game series between the Thunder and Vikings concludes on Saturday with a single game at 1 p.m. at Lee Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream.
