Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton women's basketball team used an impressive second half effort to pull away from the Elmhurst Bluejays on Saturday night. After the Bluejays closed to within 40-38 late in the third quarter, Wheaton closed the frame on an 11-2 run en route to a 70-58 victory. With their 11th-straight win, Wheaton improves to 17-4 overall and 10-2 in the CCIW. The loss drops the Bluejays to 12-9 overall and 8-4 in conference play. Wheaton will be back in action at King Arena on Wednesday when the Thunder host Illinois Wesleyan for a showdown featuring the top two teams in the CCIW standings.
Wheaton shot 45.9% (28-61) from the field and 31.6% (6-19) from the three-point line. Wheaton struggled from the charity stripe making just eight of 14 attempts for a 57.1% clip. The Bluejays were held to 36.5% (19-52) from the field and 38.5% (5-13) from the three-point line while shooting 75% (15-20) from the free throw line. Wheaton won the rebounding battle 40-32.
The Thunder got off to a quick start in the first quarter, scoring the game's first four points and jumping out to a quick 12-4 lead en route to a 16-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Wheaton pushed lead to 12 points early in the second quarter following consecutive three-pointers by
Kristi Demski. Elmhurst would force its way back into the game late in the half, holding Wheaton scoreless from the field over the final four minutes to get back to within 28-23 at the halftime break.
Elmhurst continued to close the gap early in the second half, closing to within two points on a pair of occasions including at 40-38 with three minutes left in the third quarter. Wheaton answered with a three-pointer from
Maggie Dansdill and lay-ups by
Hannah Frazier and
Jill Berg to push the lead back to nine points. The Bluejays stopped the run with a pair of free throws by another two buckets by Berg pushed Wheaton's lead to 51-40 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bluejays would get no closer than seven points during the fourth quarter as Wheaton pushed its lead to as many as 18 points following a five-point run by
Devin Kyler to put Wheaton ahead 68-50 with three minutes remaining. Elmhurst would close the game on an 8-2 push to close the final deficit to 70-58.
Devin Kyler led the Thunder with 16 points and 11 rebounds along with five assists and four blocks.
Hannah Frazier finished with 13 points, five assists and three blocks.
Jill Berg finished with 12 points and five rebounds and
Maggie Dansdill added 11 points and five rebounds. Elmhurst's Michaela Eppard led all scorers with 18 points.
