Wheaton, Ill. - An early second half run was too much for the Thunder to overcome on a cold-shooting night at King Arena on Saturday night. Wheaton was held scoreless over the first four minutes of the third quarter as the visiting Titans of UW-Oshkosh used an 8-0 run to take control for a 57-48 victory over the Thunder. The victory moves the 25th-ranked Titans to 7-0 on the season while Wheaton falls to 5-3 overall. Wheaton will next be in action on Wednesday, December 12, when the Thunder travel to Trinity Christian College for a 7 pm tipoff.
Wheaton struggled from the field, shooting just 26.4% (14-53) from the field and 28.6% (4-14) from the three-point line. Wheaton was 16-of-21 on free throw attempts to finish at 76.2%. The Titans shot 38.9% (21-54) from the field including 34.8% (8-23) from the three-point stripe. The Titans finished at 63.6% (7-11) from the charity stripe. UW-Oshkosh won the battle on the boards 42-33 including 16 offensive rebounds.
Trailing 12-10 after a disjointed first quarter, Wheaton was able to trade scores for the early part of the second quarter, keeping within a possession of the Titans.
Jill Berg's lay-up with just over six minutes left in the quarter gave Wheaton its first lead of the night at 18-17, but UW-Oshkosh answered on the following possession with a three-pointer to retake the lead. Wheaton held the Titans scoreless for the following four minutes, using a six-point run to build a 24-20 lead on a three-pointer by
Hannah Williams. The Titans closed the half on a 6-1 run, taking a 26-25 halftime lead on a free throw in the final second of the half.
UW-Oshkosh carried its momentum into the second half, scoring the first eight points of the half and holding Wheaton off the scoreboard for over three and a half minutes. Wheaton would not get back to within seven points as the Titans continued to frustrate the Thunder from the field, building a lead as big as 12 points in both the third and fourth quarters en route to the 57-48 victory.
Chloe Pustina the Titans and all scorers with 14 points and was joined in double figures by Melanie Schneider with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Erin Vande Zande added 10 points for UW-Oshkosh.
Jennifer Berg led Wheaton with nine points including eight in the first quarter.
