Chicago, Ill. - Playing with a shot at a share of the CCIW Championship on Saturday night, the Thunder men's soccer team fell 3-0 at #19-ranked North Park. The victory gives the Vikings (15-2, 7-1 CCIW) sole possession of the CCIW title and home field advantage for next week's CCIW Tournament. Wheaton's loss drops the Thunder to 10-6-1 overall and 5-3 in the CCIW. Wheaton finishes third in the conference table and will travel to Carthage on Wednesday night for a CCIW Tournament semifinal match.
North Park controlled play from the opening kick on Saturday night at the Holmgren Athletic Complex as the Vikings, outshooting Wheaton 10-1 in the first half en route to a 25-6 shot advantage.
Wheaton's high defensive line was able to trap North Park into 11 offsides calls including seven in the first half. The Vikings broke through in the 18th minute, taking advantage of a corner kick. Peder Olsen's bending corner at the 17:47 mark found the head of Shatil Khoury who sent the ball on to the far post and over the charging frame of
Hasten Biddlecome to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Biddlecome stood tall for the Thunder, making two first big first half saves to keep the score at 1-0 at the halftime break.
Olsen set North Park up to extend its lead early in the second half when Olsen's cross was converted Joachim Hoff for his 10th goal of the season.
Drew Cammarano made seven second half saves but was beat over the top from midfield in the 74th minutes for Ulrik Lund's second goal of the season, making the score 3-0 which stood as the final.
